Three hundred years ago, Giuseppe Castiglione (1688~1766), a Jesuit missionary from Milan, Italy, came to China to preach. He made a landfallin Macaowhere he adopted a Chinese name Lang Shining. Even though he came to China as a missionary, he became afulltime court painter thanks to his excellent art skills. As an artist, heserved three Emperors, Kangxi (1661~1722), Yongzheng(1723~1735)and Qianlong (1736~1795), for aperiod of 51 years.
Three hundred years have passed since Lang Shiningcame to China.In 2015, the National Palace Museumand the Opera di Santa Croce, Italy, jointlypresent “The Giuseppe Castiglione Lang Shining New Media Art Exhibition” to bring Castiglione’s workback to his homeland in both original and modernized forms. This exhibition consists of four sections: “When China Meets Europe”,“All the Glories of the Originals: AGallery of Selected Giuseppe Castiglione High Quality Replicas”, “PaintingsCome Alive: New Media Installations Inspired by Giuseppe Castiglione’s Works”,“National Treasure under the Spotlight: A Documentary and Animations”.
